Yoga For Scoliosis

Yoga For Scoliosis Detail
Scoliosis is a commonly occurring lateral curvature of the spine that affects people of all ages. It leads to poor posture as well as back, hip and leg pain. It can even impede organ function. Yoga, with its emphasis on aligning the body and strengthening muscles, offers proven benefits to scoliosis sufferers.
Because their spines are deformed, scoliosis victims develop muscular imbalance as muscles tighten on one side and weaken on the other. Yoga postures and breathing techniques release muscle tension and improve muscle tone, thereby easing pain.
Instructor Maggie Wong knows yoga's healing potential firsthand. Diagnosed with scoliosis as a teenager, she uses yoga to manage her condition and to help her students manage theirs. "My body is a map that guides my teaching. My inner self tells me when techniques are working and when they are not."
